BECOMING A FOSTER PARENT

The information below provides a basic understanding of the process by which a family becomes a licensed foster care worker in California   Each county might have variations to this process

As you journey through the process of becoming a resource (foster) parent, lake a look at some resources that might be helpful.  We list books, movies, articles and more that we believe are helpful as you navigate this process.

THE PROCESS

The information below provides a basic process by which a family becomes a licensed foster care worker in California   Each county might have  variations to this process, so be sure to check in with them.
Foster parents are also known as Resource Families. Resource Family Approval is the State of California process that an adult, relative, family friend or adoptive family completes to be approved to provide a caring home for foster children and youth.
Foster parents must meet certain requirements before being approval.  Below is a partial list of the requirements. A Family, Youth and Children's Division social worker will guide you through the approval process.

THE STEPS

  1. Attend an online or in person session to learn more about whether foster care is right for you. You will receive basic information on foster care, adoption, and the Resource Family Approval process.
  2. Attend and participate in county or FFA trainings provided to become a foster parent in your county.
  3. Complete the Resource Family Application form and supporting documents. You'll be fingerprinted for your background check. (There are no fees.) Approval takes approximately 90 days once the application is submitted.
  4. Train for CPR and First Aid certification.
  5. Arrange a home visit with a social worker, who will evaluate the home for safety, comfort and bedroom space.
  6. Interview with a social worker to discuss matching a child with your family situation and preferences.

When the background check is complete and the requirements are met, you will be eligible to care for a foster child.

WHAT TO DO NEXT

  1. There are two options to begin the process:
Find your county under ‘Foster a Child”  to get the information you need to start the process of fostering.
Contact your local county Human Services or Child Welfare Services office.
